Life in Medicine HatMedicine Hat

Medicine Hat is a city in Southeast Alberta Canada along the South Saskatchewan River about 295 km southeast of Calgary. Medicine Hat along with Redcliff, are part of the Cypress County area and it is the sixth-largest city in the province. Medicine Hat is home to about 64,000 residents and originally started as a railway town. It served by the Trans Canada Highway in the eastern terminus of the Crows Nest Hwy. or Highway 3. It's surrounded by the nearby communities of Redcliff and the hamlets of Desert Blume, Dunmore, Irvine, Seven Persons, and Veinerville.

Medicine Hat is known as the "gas city" known for its in the large natural gas fields. The name Medicine Hat is an English interpretation for the Blackfoot word for the Eagle tail feather headdress worn by medicine men. The areas gently sloping valley with converging waterways makes it an ideal place for hearty native cottonwood trees, bison herds, which commonly passes the area, and the historic Blackfoot, Creek, and Assiniboine Nations tribes.

Medicine Hat has been a city since about 1883 when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the area and crossed the river. Many European Canadians established a townsite and Medicine Hat was incorporated as a city in 1906. It's halfway between Winnipeg and Vancouver on the Pacific coast. The landscape is dominated by the South Saskatchewan River Valley as well as several tributaries throughout communities flowing into the river within the boundaries of the city. These waterways have cut a dramatic Valley landscape offering stunning views, beautiful typography, and gorgeous places to call home.

The programs have before and after school care, outside promotions in a variety of programs for early childhood, international students, summer school options, academics, and sports programs.

Medicine Hat Weather

Our most beautiful months tend to be between July and August, which is also when we get most of our tourists. More likely to see freezing temperatures from the end of November to about the end of March for our lows and highs of around 26° to 28° in the summer months. However, even in the summer months, the lows can drop to about 10°, which is a nice cool off every evening. With such year-round mild temperatures are just another reason to enjoy living in Medicine Hat.

You can see that Medicine Hat may be a smaller community but we have so much going on that it's almost impossible to get bored. We have an abundance of parks, fantastic sports leagues, wonderful schools, and we are home to the South Alberta Light Horse Army reserve units.
